Home Projects Garden project

Garden project

Behind the old church building we set up a nursery. The  Western Cape department of agriculture endeavours to promote the growing of vegetables by local people. However, more is needed to help people take initiative. With financial assistance of Rotaryclub "Rucphen Zundert Halderbergen" in the Netherlands, a local, Sicelo Tshozi has been trained to become a gardener. He is in charge of the nursery but also assists local people with the lay-out and maintenance of small gardens. Although the soil is poor, he works so enthusiastically that a lot of vegetables are sold to locals in the township, as well as to more privileged people in surrounding villages and even to restaurants. The quality of the seedlings is so good that various farmers buy them. Even the Western Cape department of agriculture buys our seedlings to provide other townships.
